Ulysses Dalton Brown
was drafted into the Army on October 3, 1917 at
Santa Fe, New Mexico. At the time he was drafted he
and his wife (Zemily) were living on a homestead at
Fort Sumner. He was 28 years old.
On the first day of September
1918, he was promoted to Sergeant in Company "A"
Fourth Rifle Training Regiment of the Army while
stationed at Camp Pike Ark. He was discharged on
December 14, 1918
UD was the father of the Brown
sisters (Doris, Lois, Ava, Faye, Joy and Ann) and the
husband of Zemily.

J. L. Self
entered the service June 3, 1945 right
after graduation. He was stationed at Ft. Robinson,
Arkansas and was later transferred to Ft. Bliss in El
Paso. He was assigned to the 126th Battalion of
the Infantry. J.L. spent most of his service time as a
cook. He was discharged November 30, 1946.
He married
Winona Faye Brown while he was in the service. He
is the son of Martin B. and Juanita Self. He is a
graduate of Silverton High School.

Orval Laroy (Mac) McGowen
boarded a Greyhound bus in Matador, Texas
headed for Lubbock, Texas. Upon arriving in Lubbock,
the bus stopped at the Selective Service office and he
and several other passengers got off, all going inside
the office. He was inducted into the Army March 06,
1943. After being processed he was sent to Ft. Sill,
Oklahoma for 12 days then on to Indian Town Gap,
Pennsylvania for basic training. He then was sent to
New York City for 3 months and later was shipped
overseas out of Seattle, Washington. He was on a C-5
converted freighter and there were 25,000 troops on the
ship. They were on the water 31 days finally landing at
Finch Atvin, New Guinea.
He was assigned to
496-4th Battalion 247-4th Company
. He operated heavy equipment unloading ships. He
served in New Guinea for 18 month.
Later he was sent
to Manila in the Philippines on a Navy Transport ship.
It took 8 days to get there. He served in Manila for 6
months.
In 1945 he was back
in the states eating Christmas dinner under the Golden
Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. It was 2 days
before the ship could be unloaded.
After being
discharged from the Army in January 1946, Mac moved to
Plainview, Texas from Flomot, Texas and attended
Lippert’s Business College using his GI bill in 1946.
He met Cordelia (Deal) Self and they were married on
March 19, 1949 |

William "Bill" Self entered the
service in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 29, 1948.
He served as a Rifleman.
He was stationed in Guam, Japan and Korea
where he fought in the Korean Campaign. He was promoted
to Sergeant on September 10, 1950.
Bill was awarded the Purple Heart. After being wounded he was retired from
the Marine Corp on December 1, 1951.
He was the son of Martin B. and Juanita
Self and the husband of Valvrie Honey Self. He is a graduate of Silverton High School.

son of Mr and Mrs. Joel
Nance, enterd the U. S. Army in February of 1945.
Trained at Camp
Roberts, Calif. Served as a M.P. in
Philippines, Pacific Theater, W.W. II.

Roy Younger
entered the service on August 18, 1948 at
Tyler, Texas. He completed his training at Ft. Belvoid,
Virginia. He served during the Korean War with the 112th
Engr. C Bn 27th Infantry Division. Roy was married
to Lou Self Younger.

Duane Charles Wright
enlisted into the U S
Army in December 1952. He served in Korea w/808
Engr. Ave BN and received an honorable discharge in
1955 @ Rank of SGT (E5). He completed his
basic training at Ft. Leonard wood Missouri. He
attended Corp. of Engr. school for drafting and
surveying at Ft. Belvoir, Va in 1953.
He was stationed at Ft Walters in
Mineral Wells, Texas w/Hq Co. 1901 EAB-SCARWAF
Awards,US Pres Unit Citation, ROK Pres Unit
Citation, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal,
National Defense Service Medal, GCMDL,
After discharge from active duty he was in the
National Guard of Iowa w/Btry C 556 FA BN and Army
Reserve w/Btry A 3rd Rocket-Howitzer Bat in Dallas
Texas. Discharged with rank of SFC (E7).

Flunoy "Flute" Hutsell
son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clyde Hutsell of Silverton,
entered the U. S. Navy on March 1, 1951 during the
Korean War. Trained at U.S. Naval Training Center
in San Diego, Calif. Stationed at Cabniss Naval Air
Base, Corpus Christi, Texas.
Flute was the husband of Junis Mercer
Hutsell.

Mike Mercer son of Fred
and Doris (Brown) Mercer entered the Army Engineers
in 1967. He took basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas
and was stationed at Ft. Lenardwood, Missouri. He
served in Vietnam and was discharged at Ft. Benning
Georgia in 1968.

Rex Gale Redies served in the Army
National Guard from 1958 until 1964. He served
six months active duty in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.

Steven Darryl McGowen
joined and was accepted in the Unites
States Marine Corps, October 1969 after graduating from
Plainview High School, Plainview, Texas. Entering the
service in January 1970, he was assigned to 1st
Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California for basic
training. After graduating he was deployed to Quang Nam
Province, Republic of Vietnam August 1970 where he was
attached to 3rd Marine Amphibious Force – 2nd
Combined Action Group – Combined Action Platoon 2-3-4.
On 22 November 1970, he received an Award of the Combat
Action Ribbon. He served in Vietnam 8 months.
After returning to
the states he attended Camp Pendleton Correctional
Facility Training and would escort correctional
prisoners.
Later he enrolled
in the Police Academy, Mira Costa College, San Diego,
California, where he received his POST (Peace Officer
Standards and Training) certificate.
After being
discharged from the Marines in January of 1972. was
employed with Missouri Beef Packing, Plainview, Texas.

Thomas Warren Self
enlisted in the Army on December 6, 1972. As an
electronic mechanic his dutes were isolating
malfunctions and maintaining turrent systems, readying
systems for operational missions and completing
maintenance and inspection for the B-52 SAC Bomber. He
served 12 years in the service, three of those on Guam
with the 43rd squadron. Thomas is the son of Bill
and Valvrie Self.

David Lee Self
enlisted September 30, 1974. He spent two
years as a pavement specialist at K.I. Sawyer AFB
Michigan keeping runways in good repair and clear of
snow in the winter. He spent on year in Korea with the
Red Horse Unit building roads, driving and moving heavy
equipment. He was discharged in 1977. He is the
son of Bill and Valvrie Self.

Jamie Lynn
Frizzell enlisted in the Army in January
1990 at the age of 19. He did his basic training
and basic airborne training (jump school) at Ft. Benning,
Georgia. From there he transferred to Ft.
Campbell, Kentucky where he completed his training in
air assault in the 101st Airborne - the Screaming
Eagles.
In September 1990 his unit was
deployed to Iraq where he served in Dessert Storm. He
was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the Kuwait
government. Each member of his unit was also
awarded the Spearhead medal for going the furtherest
into enemy territory. He was also awarded the
Army Commendation medal. In May 1991 he returned to the
Ft. Campbell where he served until his discharge.
Jamie is the son of Kathy and Micky Woodard and Lynn Frizzell.

Charles "Charlie" Wright
entered the Army February 7, 1978. He was discharged
August 17, 1979. He was stationed in Ft Knox and Ft
Benning, Ga. He was in the infantry where he
worked as a tank and truck mechanic |

Riddell C.
Hutsell joined the Air Force in 1942 and
was in the first class of naval air cadets that
graduated after the start of World War II. He stayed in
the service until 1958 serving in World War II and
Korea. He was the son of Clyde and Manema Hutsell
and the brother of Flute). |
